Abstract

1421679 Feeding tread strips to tyre building drums CONTINENTAL GUMMI-WERKE AG 19 March 1974 [13 April 1973] 12111/74 Heading B7C [Also in Division G1] A strip of unvulcanized tyre tread rubber is fed by driven rollers 12 until the leading edge 11 reaches a sensor 13. When in this arrested position, and the strip is a little short of its required length one or more of the sensors 14 are covered by the rear end of the strip and cause a motor 20 to move two beams 23, each carrying at least one roller 24, together by an appropriate amount so that upon the conveyer 2 being inclined and the strip being advanced, by pad 10 on the extension of ram 9, on to a tyre carcass on a drum 4, the strip will be squeezed between the rollers and stretched to the required length. If sensor 15 is not covered or sensor 16 is covered the strip is much too short or too long respectively and is discarded. Each sensor 13-16 is preferably as illustrated in Fig. 4. Compressed air is passed through tubes 27, 28. When the air impinges on the strip it is deflected into annular space 29 to act via tube 30 on a diaphragm which thus provides a signal. During the measuring operation, ram 18 presses a plate 19 on to the end of the strip The sensors may alternatively be mechanical, electrical or optical, e.g. sensor 13 may be a hinged strip and surfaces slidably engaging the strip edges may replace the rollers 24. Rams 5, 9 may be pneumatic or hydraulic.
