Abstract
1421175 Drawing glass fibres OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 8 Dec 1972 [8 Dec 1971] 56820/72 Heading C1M [Also in Divisions D1 and G2-G3] The speed of the packages on to which glass strand is wound is controlled so that the linear speed of the strand wound is the same as the linear speed of the drawn strand. Glass filaments are continuously extruded at 16 from the feeder 10 and are formed into bundles at shoes 24 after being cooled and sized at 32 and 36. A pulling wheel 40 is rotated at constant speed by motor 44 to control the travelling speed of the filaments. The wheel 40 has its annular surface covered with polyurethane to improve engagement between the wheel and the filament bundles. The bundles or strands then pass over winding tension roller 54, guides 62 to winder 70 where they are wound on package 72 rotated by a motor (104) driving through a controllable clutch 106. The arriving strand is traversed by oscillating guide 88. The roller 54 is mounted on a lever 56 and is tensioned by a spring 58 to centralize the potentiometer 175 which detects angular movement of lever 56. As the package diameter changes the position of roller 54 will alter the signal applied through integrator 150 to summing junction J1 of the retroactive control loop to charge the energization of eddy current clutch 106. The speed of the package is diluted by a tachogenerator 146 and passed to junction J1 through a potential divider 170.
