Abstract

1420840 Dynamo-electric machines A J WALKER 30 May 1974 [5 June 1973] 26630/73 Heading H2A In an electromagnetically driven pump in which the pump impeller and a driving rotor are formed as an integral unit mounted on a spherical bearing, the bearing is supported from a point on the pump casing adjacent to the fluid inlet and remote from the "stator" which drives the rotor. The rotor may be the permanent magnet rotor 2, Fig. 1 (not shown), of an electric motor having a stator producing a rotating field. Alternatively, as shown, the rotor 32 may be the driven part of a magnetic coupling of which the driving part 33 is rigidly connected to the rotor 41 of a squirrel cage induction motor. The ball of the spherical bearing may be fixed to the rotor, (Fig. 1) or, as shown, to the supporting arm 47. Movement of the rotor towards non- magnetic partition 3 is prevented either by a fixed post 13 (Fig. 1) projecting through a bore in the rotor to the region of the spherical bearing, or by interacting permanent magnets 48, 49, 48<SP>1</SP>, 49<SP>1</SP>. The salient poles 51 in the stator of the induction motor have slits 52 to reduce eddy currents and the air gap between the stator and rotor has a radially extending region 39 and an axially extending region 40. Each of the two parts of the magnetic coupling has several permanent magnet rings, e.g. 30, 30<SP>1</SP> of different radii.
