Abstract

1420458 Light guides POST OFFICE 20 March 1974 [18 April 1973] 18747/73 Heading G2J A mode mixer for mixing modes of propagation of light comprises a curved section of dielectric optical waveguide, see e.g. Figs. 4a, 4c, (not shown), the curved section having a radius of curvature, R, small enough to induce mode mixing, and all radii of curvature of the section being large enough to prevent mixing between propagating and radiating modes. The curved section may be bent into a figure of eight or comprise a meandering length of dielectric optical waveguide or comprise such a length bent into a helix of variable pitch.
