Abstract
1417144 Purifying I.C. engine exhaust gases KINEMATICS Ltd 18 June 1973 [20 June 1972] 28768/72 Heading B1W [Also in Divisions Fl and G3] A valve 24 in a flow passage between the air intake, e.g. the air cleaner 22, and a position in the ehxaust system where exhaust gas pressure changes occur during engine operation, e.g. the exhaust manifold 18, permits air flow into the exhaust system when the pressure therein is sub-atmospheric and a restricted recirculation of exhaust gas to the air intake when the pressure in the exhaust system is super-atmospheric. At least some of the air fed to the exhaust system will be drawn into the engine cylinders. The valve 24 comprises an apertured disc 50, e.g. stainless steel with an outer ring of apertures (52), Fig. 3 (not shown), which are obstructed and unobstructed respectively with the disc engaging the limiting surfaces 46 and 40 of the valve chamber 36. A central group of apertures (54) in the disc 50 are not obstructed by the surface 46. A water container 60 is connected to the throat of a venturi 56 in the air and exhaust gas flow passage for water addition to the air or exhaust gas flow in the passage. The disc 50 may oscillate between the surfaces 40 and 46 during certain engine operating conditions to provide a pulsating flow of exhaust gas or air to the intake or exhaust system. An afterburner or catalytic converter may be provided in the exhaust system downstream of the valve 24. Dimensions and numbers of disc apertures are given in the Specification.
