Abstract
1415442 Vapour phase polymerization SOLVAY ET CIE SA 6 July 1973 [19 July 1972] 32251/73 Addition to 1124237 Heading C3P Vinyl chloride is polymerized or copolymerized in the gaseous phase in the presence of a free radical initiator and optionally an inert solid and in the presence of a gaseous diluent boiling below vinyl chloride so that the total pressure is at least as high as the saturated vapour pressure of vinyl chloride at the polymerization temperature but the partial pressure of the vinyl chloride is below the saturated vapour pressure. Preferably polymerization is effected in a stirred or fluidized bed of PVC and liquid vinyl chloride is added to control the temperature (see Specifications 1,124,237, 1,308,103 and 1,363,566). The diluent is inert, e.g. hydrogen, nitrogen, helium, argon, methane, ethane or propane or a comonomer, e.g. ethylene, propylene or vinylidene fluoride.
