Abstract
1414684 Acetylene and synthesis gas production V F POPOV 17 April 1973 18418/73 Heading C5E [Also in Division F4] Acetylene and synthesis gas is obtained by supplying oxygen via means 5 to a chamber 4 defined between two hollow grids 1, 2 cooled by coolant circulating therethrough tube 8 extending through grids 1 and 2 to supply a mixture of hydrocarbons, e.g. natural gas, from an inlet zone 15 to a combustion zone 16, and slots 17 on the outer face of tubes 8 for supplying the oxygen from chamber 4 to zone 16, one end of each tube 8 being hermetically secured in a respective channel 7 of that grid 2 adjacent zone 15 and the other end of each tube 8 being located in a respective channel 6 of the other grid 1 with a sliding fit allowing axial movement of the tube 8 relative to grid 1 and heat transfer thereto from tubes 8. Slots 17 may be longitudinal or helical. Part of the hydrocarbons burn in zone 16 until the available oxygen is expended and the remaining part disintegrates to give acetylene and synthesis gas. Combustion is stabilized by supplying an ozone/oxygen mixture via slots 17.
