Abstract
1412801 Protein fibres RALSTON PURINA CO 18 May 1973 23896/73 Heading A2B [Also in Division B5] Carbohydrate-containing protein fibres are prepared by heating under pressure a confined, flowing stream of an aq. slurry of protein and carbohydrate the slurry having a protein content of at least 35% by wt. on a dry basis e.g. up to 67.8%. The solids content of the aq. slurry may be 20-35% by wt. The wt. ratio of carbohydrate to protein is preferably 0.3:1-1.5:1 on a dry basis. The protein may be derived from soy beans, field beans, albumen, casein, brewers yeast, torula yeast or petro protein. The carbohydrate may be cellulose from a plant or derived from deproteinated soy beans or from corn cob, wood chips or wood pulp. The protein and carbohydrate-containing slurry may be formed into a fibre by flowing the slurry, having a pH of 4-11 together with salts and hydroxides of Ca, Mg, Cu and Al, at a pressure of 50-5,000 p.s.i.g. through a tube having a diameter of 0.015-0.3 in heated by heat exchangers to a temp. of 165-315‹F, the slurry being extruded through a slot having dimensions of 0.375 x 0.0625 in. into air. Alternatively the slurry may be heated by admixture with pressurised steam in a "jet cooker".
