Abstract

1412413 Fuel injectors C A V Ltd 19 Oct 1972 [28 Oct 1971] 50066/71 Heading F1B A liquid fuel injection nozzle comprises a fluidpressure operable resiliently loaded stepped valve member 15 opened by fuel pressure acting on a surface defined on its wider portion to allow fuel flow from inlet 18 to outlet 16, a piston 24 of smaller cross-sectional area than said surface operably associated with the valve member and located in a cylinder 22 which can be supplied with fuel at substantially the same pressure as that supplied to inlet 18 via a conduit 23 fitted with a non-return valve. This augments the force exerted by the resilient means 19 to increase the closing force exerted on the valve member. The piston and valve member are connected by push rod 21. In the system shown in Fig. 1, fuel is supplied by a pump 9 to nozzles 10, 11, 12 in turn, the peak pressure reached to cause opening of the valve member of nozzle 10 being supplied also to the cylinder 22 of nozzle 11 so that a higher peak pressure is needed to open the valve member of nozzle 11. The system thus starts from rest with a low nozzle opening pressure, which increases as the engine speed rises. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the conduit leading to the cylinder holding the piston 24 is branched from inlet 18 within the nozzle body.
