Abstract

1408981 Laminates MONSANTO Ltd 19 Feb 1974 [16 April 1973] 18145/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Materials suitable for use as packaging comprise laminates formed by extrusion coating substrates with compositions comprising (1) an olefin polymer having uniformly distributed therein (2) aluminium powder, (3) an inert high opacity white filler and (4) an inert desiccant. The substrate may be paper, polypropylene film which may be coated with vinylidene chloride/vinyl chloride copolymer, cellulose acetate film, polyethylene terephthalate film or styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer film. The filler may be zinc oxide, barium oxide or titanium dioxide. The desiccant may be calcium oxide, calcium sulphate, magnesium oxide or zinc oxide. The substrate may be pretreated by flames, electrical discharges, ionizing radiation or chlorine, or by chemical oxidation. In an example a film extruded from a composition of ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, aluminium powder, titanium dioxide and calcium oxide is laminated to a paper substrate using nip rollers. Other suitable olefin polymers are mentioned.
