1408703 Cable cutters POST OFFICE 19 Feb 1974 [19 Feb 1973] 7968/73 Heading B3W A cable cutter comprises levers 1 and 2 pivoted at 3, carrying cutting jaws 6, 7 and actuated by a second order lever 16, 19 which is pivoted to the lever 1 at 17 and is engageable at its end 21 in any one of a series of notches 22, on a member 4 rigid with the lever 2, which define the fulcrum of the lever. The pivot 17 constitutes a drive transfer pivot as the lever 16, 19 is pivoted back and fore to move one lever end 21 into successive notches 22 to open or close the jaws. A spring-loaded pawl 13 prevents the jaws opening as the lever end moves from one notch to the next. The second order lever comprises a plunger 19 within a handle 16 and urged towards the member 4 by a spring 23. An arm 27 rigid with the plunger 19 rides in a T-shaped slot 28 in the handle 16. With the arm at the base of the slot the plunger end 21 is urged into a notch 22 by the spring 23. The pivotal movement of the handle 16 is limited by engagement of shoulders 38 or 39 on the lever 1, Fig. 2, with a boss 40 on a block 15 rigid with the handle 16. The block 15 limits the closing movement of the handle 16 and a handle 37 fixed to the lever 2. Mounted in the block 15 is a pin 30 spring loaded to abut a cam 35 on the plunger 19. For fast opening or closing of the jaws, the arm 27 is moved to the top portion of the T-slot 28. This raising of the plunger 19 causes the pin 30 to project from the block 15 and, on pivoting of the handle 16, to disengage the pawl 13 from its notch. As shown, in using the cutter the handle 16 is moved to and from the handle 37 which is held stationary. Alternatively, the stationary reference may be a handle rigid with the lever 1 or a flat plate, integral with a keeper web 10<SP>1</SP> for the jaw 6, on which the operator may stand.
