Abstract

1408548 Armour-piercing; explosive incendiary projectiles DIEHL 8 April 1974 [11 May 1973] 15512/74 Heading F3A A projectile comprises an explosive incendiary charge 10 and a sub-calibre armourpiercing core 2 that is connected to a fullcalibre tail part 5 by a part defining a predetermined breaking place. Upon firing, the tail part acts as a drive part, and, upon the impact of the projectile, drives the sub-calibre core into the armour plate of the target, after which the tail part upon striking the armour plate can tear off at the predetermined breaking place and be divested in front of the armour plate. A ballistic cap 7 is secured by a screw thread or recessing 6 which forms the predetermined breaking place. An impact-ignitable incendiary charge 9 and a soft iron cap 8 are contained within the ballistic cap. A fuze 11 is provided for detonating the charge 10 inside the target, but, if the projectile strikes very thick armour plate which is not fully perforated by the subcalibre core, the fuze detonates the charge 10 outside the target and this drives the core fully in whilst blasting the tail part 5 and the fuze 11 rearwards. If the projectile strikes thin armour plate the tail part is not torn off and divested in front of the armour plate.
