Abstract
1406397 Punching INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 19 Nov 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 53562/73 Heading B3W For fine blanking, an auxiliary punch and die 6, 15 coact to punch partly through the thickness of a workpiece from one side, above as shown, and a main punch and die 19, 3 then coact to completely punch through the workpiece from the other side. The main punch 19 is resiliently coupled by a spring 29 to a slide 24 driven by a motor via a toggle mechanism (neither shown). The auxiliary die 15, surrounding the punch 19, and its supports 13, 14 are supported by a hydraulic cylinder 18. The auxiliary punch 6 is driven by a hydraulic cylinder 11 and the main die 3 surrounding it is supported by a fixed mount 1. In operation, with the auxiliary punch 6 projecting slightly from main die 3, Fig. 1, the slide 24 raises the auxiliary die 15 and the workpiece resting on it against the auxiliary punch 6 and die 3, the punch causing the workpiece material to enter the aperture 17 of the die 15 and the punch 19 receding and compressing the springs 29. The material is clamped between the dies 3 and 15. As the slide 24 is raised further, the main punch 19 is raised with it and coacts with the main die 3 to punch out a blank, the auxiliary punch 6 receding against the action of hydraulic ram 12. When the surface of the main punch 19 is flush with the face 4 of the die 3 the motion of the slide 24 is reversed. To strip the workpiece from the die 3, the pressure in cylinders 11 and 18 is momentarily interrupted. Pressure is restored during descent of the punch, to cylinder 18 first and then to cylinder 11 which replaces the blank in the workpiece which is then moved out of the dies to a station where the blank is pneumatically ejected.
