1406275 Rack-drive locomotives HUNSLET (HOLDINGS) Ltd 26 Nov 1973 [2 Dec 1972] 55804/72 Heading B7H A locomotive for use in mines and quarries comprises longitudinally-spaced rack wheels 27, 28 which are adapted to engage a fixed rack on steep gradients and are rotatably mounted on respective driving axles 17, 18 carrying railengaging driving wheels 35, 36, 37, 38, the rack wheels 27, 28 being driven by a pair of outputs from a first gear-box 30, and the axles 17, 18 being driven by a pair of outputs from a second gear-box 20. Separate gear-boxes 23, 24, 34, 35 each having resilient suspension means 25, 26 connect the axles 17, 18 to two outputs 21, 22 from the gear-box 20 and the rack wheels 27, 28 to two outputs 31, 32 from the gear-box 30. Hydraulic motors 15, 16 each connected through a coupling 19, 29 to one of the gear-boxes 20, 30 are supplied by respective variable-output pump units 14 driven through a shift 13 by a diesel engine 10 having a radiator 11 and exhaust gas conditioner 12.
