Abstract
1404673 Determining functional & mechanical properties GOSUDARSTVENNY NAUCHNOISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT MASHINOVEDENIA 3 Aug 1972 36270/72 Heading G1S [Also in Division B6] To determine the functional and mechanical properties of a material, e.g. such properties as the coefficients of sliding and rolling friction, the coefficient of cohesion, the modulus of elasticity, and impact hardness, a test body is set rotating about a horizontal axis and is then dropped to impact against a reference surface, parameters of the impact and subsequent trajectory of the test body being determined and used to calculate the properties of the materials of which the test body and reference surface are made. As shown in Fig. 2, the test body may be a wheel E which can be rotated by a jet of air acting on a turbine wheel 15 fixed to the wheel hub 9 as in Fig. 4. On release of the limbs of a holder 5 the wheel falls vertically on to a horizontal surface K, its trajectory being traced on a coordinate sheet 25 by a jet of marker liquid ejected from the hub. In an alternative embodiment, as in Figs. 5 and 6, a ball N is rotated by a D.C. motor 38 about a horizontal axis and is then released to fall on a reference specimen 29 whose temperature can be varied by means (not shown). The ball rebounds from the specimen 29 and the length and height of its rebounding is meausred by imprints it makes on adjustable plates 45, 52 carrying carbon paper.
