Abstract

1403524 Fuel injection pumps CAV Ltd 9 Oct 1972 [15 Oct 1971] 48019/71 Heading F1A The timing of a fuel injection pump is adjusted by a pressure operated device comprising a cupshaped piston 23 slidable in a cylinder 22, a second piston 27 slidable in cylinder bore 25 within the piston 23, and springs 24, 30 for urging respectively, the cup-shaped piston 23 and the second piston 27 to the end 26 of the cylinder 22. The piston 27 is provided with a bore 28 for receiving the timing adjustment member of the pump e.g. the radial projection (29) on the exterior of the angularly adjustable internal cam (10) of a conventional rotary distributor radial cylinder pump. In operation feedpump pressure is supplied to (i) the pump inlet through a passage controlled by a throttle valve (not shown), (ii) a passage 13a in the cylinder end 26 and (iii) via a valve 32 to the closed end of the cylinder 25. Thus as feedpump pressure increases both pistons 23, 27 move rightwardly together to effect an advance in the injection timing. In the throttle valve is closed, the valve 32 is arranged to move and connect the cylinder 25 to drain whereby the piston 27 moves relative to the piston 23 to effect a further timing advance
