Abstract

1401881 Tension springs SOC APPLICAZIONI GOMMA ANTIVIBRANTI SAGA SpA 21 July 1972 [21 July 1971] 34113/72 Heading F2S [Also in Division B7] A tension spring for a vehicle suspension (see Division B7) comprises a hollow cylindrical body of elastomeric or plastics material reinforced with an even number of helical windings 16, 17 of metallic wire or twisted textile threads, the windings of each pair being inclined at the same angle X to the longitudinal axis of the body but oppositely wound. The interior of the hollow body is supplied with liquid or gas under pressure. This may be a closed volume of fluid, in which case the rigidity of the spring increases as it is tensioned. Alternatively there may be a compensator for keeping the pressure of the fluid, and hence the rigidity of the spring, constant with extension, or for varying the fluid pressure to allow for load and road conditions. The tension spring may be used straight as shown (and in Figs. 1, 2, not shown), or U- shaped or in a closed loop (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown). In each ease the spring acts on a lever connected to the vehicle wheel. Graphs of the spring characteristic are given (Fig. 4, not shown).
