Abstract

1499706 Coated polyester films IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 July 1976 [4 Aug 1975] 25121/76 Heading B2E A support film of a linear polyester has a coating of a copolymer comprising 3 - 25 mole% of glycidyl methacrylate or glycidyl acrylate, 35 to 90 mole% of one or more esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, e.g. methyl, ethyl, hexyl, isopropyl, propyl, butyl heptyl, n-octyl and 2 - ethylhexyl, and I to 60 mole% acrylonitrile. The copolymer may also include up to 3 mole% of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid. The coating may also include up to 15% of an acrylic or methacrylic monomer having a functional hydrophilic group, e.g. hydroxyethyl methacrylate or α - methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane. The support film may be biaxially oriented and heat set polyethylene terephthalate. The coated film may be further coated with cellulose acetate, a thermoplastic or thermosetting acrylic, lacquer, cellulose acetate butyrate, cellulose acetate propionate or polyvinyl acetate (0 - 80% hydrolysed). The first layer may include an added cross linking agent when less than 20 mole% of acrylonitrile is present and the proportions of glycidyl methacrylate or glycidyl acrylate and the acrylic or methacrylic monomer with a functional hydrophilic group are less than 15% and 10% respectively. Suitable crosslinking agents include an epoxy resin, an alkyd resin, and/or a condensation product of an amine and an aldehyde. The cross linking agent may be a condensation product of melamine, diazine, urea cyclic ethylene urea, cyclic propylene urea, thiourea, cyclic ethylene thiourea, alkyl melamines benzoguanamines, guanamines, alkyl guanamines and aryl guanamines with formaldehyde.
