Abstract

1499103 Tunnelling machines INDUSTRY SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 3 April 1975 [8 April 1974] 15541/74 Heading E1F A tunnelling machine comprises a cutting head 1, means 17 for rotating the head about an axis and impact cutting tools 5 driven by reciprocating hydraulic motors and mounted on the head in an arrangement which is symmetrical about said axis and which comprises at least a first and a second set of cutting tool units, the units of the first set being located at a first common radial distance from the axis and the units of the second set being located at a second common radial distance from the axis, the second set comprising units which are circumferentially offset from the units of the first set. Preferably the units of the first set are offset by 45‹ from units of the second set, the head is oscillated about its axis of rotation through an angle of at least 90‹, and the outermost cutting tools are inclined forwardly and outwardly from the axis of rotation of the head to cut a clearance for the head. At least one spoil removal channel may be provided through the head or along the outer wall of the head, such channels preferably having a spiral configuration about the axis of rotation of the head. The cutting tool units are preferably of the type disclosed in the referred to Specification 1480903.
