Abstract

1498181 Shaft seals PIONEER WESTON Ltd 17 Dec 1975 [3 Oct 1974] 42862/74 Heading F2B A shaft seal comprises a plurality of, e.g. two, arcuate housing parts 10 secured together, each mounting an arcuate sealing element 16, e.g. of elastomeric material, in a dovetailshaped recess defined by the housing part 10 and an arcuate clamping member 26, the sealing element 16 having a dovetail shaped head 20 and terminating in a flexible central web 30 from which extends a seal lip 23. The embodiments show the sealing element with two lips, one or both of which may be loaded with a garter spring 29; in addition one may have a ladder spring 28. When no spring is present, the lip is said to be suitable for excluding dust. The shaft seal may be supported in a casing 31 by an interference fit, as in Fig. 4 (not shown) or attached by a flange 13, Fig. 1.
