Abstract

1496451 Cylinder head for IC engine KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ AG 14 Jan 1976 [29 March 1975] 01375/76 Heading F1B A cylinder head 1 of cylindrical shape, which is held to a crank-case, cylinder block or cylinder liner by tie-rods (not shown) extending through lugs 7, is provided with a frusto-conical internal wall 10 to take stresses while the thinner external wall 3 is free to expand and contract and form a good seal with a gasket 6. The wall 10 divides the head 1 into two coolant chambers, an inner chamber 11 and an outer chamber 12 to which water is supplied by a branching duct (not shown) to one side of the head. At the opposing side there is a connection between the two chambers 11, 12 and an outlet (also not shown). In the inner chamber 11 the water may be directed downwardly along the frusto-conical wall 10 towards the head base 2. Gas pockets 13 are formed adjacent inlet and exhaust poppet valves and interupt the frusto-conical wall 10. However to take load, the outer walls 14 of the gas pockets are made the same thickness as the frusto-conical wall 10.
