Abstract

1496076 Helical spring rings G SUNDHOLM 14 May 1975 [20 May 1974 11 June 1974] 20452/75 Headings F2S and F2H A retainer ring may be formed from a helical spring 1 within which are contained reinforcing balls 2, the ends of the spring being adapted for interconnection such as by hooks 3 to form the ring for reception in a groove to secure a flange to a tube. End turns 4, 4<SP>1</SP> of the spring 1 are compressed to retain the balls 2 which are of metal and fill substantially the whole spring. The diameter of the balls is 0À1 mm. smaller than the inner diameter of the spring. In a modification, a connecting piece is inserted in both spring ends and either the spring ends are welded to the connecting piece or the end turns of the spring are stretched out and coiled into one another. The ring may also be used as a retainer for a ball bearing.
