Abstract
1494687 Automatic control of IC engines DANA CORP 4 March 1975 [4 March 1974] 8832/75 Heading G3N [Also in Division F1] The amount of exhaust gas recirculated to the input of an I.C. engine is controlled in accordance with an electrical signal indicative of the load on the engine. A distinction is drawn between a petrol spark ignition engine where the amount of recirculated gas increases with load and a diesel, compression ignition, engines where the amount decreases with load. The embodiments described relate to diesel engines and as shown the engine load is detected by sensing the position of the rack 26 of the fuel injection pump using an electromagnetic pick-off 25. The position signal is demodulated and passed through a low pass filter 32, whose cut-off is selected to eliminate engine vibration effects to form a desired recirculation valve position signal which passes to comparator 33. The recirculating valve position is sensed by electromagnetic arrangement 21 and after filtering at 42 passes to comparator 33 as an actual valve position signal. An error signal output from comparator 33 causes switch 44 to produce a drive signal to the valve positioning motor 20 by altering the mark/space ratio of the output signal of switch 44. The resistor 35 alters the loading range of the control and resistor 51 sets a no load, fully open, condition for the valve. If a non-linear valve is used to control the recirculation the shape of cam 26 can be altered to ensure that the system responds linearly to load changes. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), further comparator stages are added to provide full recirculation below a fixed speed and no recirculation above a maximum speed regardless of fuel rack position. Additionally the linear curve may be shifted at a given speed to give a higher proportion of recirculation above that speed.
