Abstract

1494291 Bending and tempering glass LIBBEYOWENS-FORD CO 12 Feb 1975 5916/75 Heading C1M Glass sheets 15 are moved, while substantially horizontal, through furnace 12, where the glass is heated to substantially its bending temperature, through bending area 13 and then through tempering area 14, the sheets being carried from furnace 12 to bending area 13 on a series of rolls 16 which are of progressively increasing transverse curvature, to prebend the sheets. A passageway may be provided between the bending and tempering areas which is normally closed by gate 40, the gate 40 being opened (by air cylinder 41) to allow each sheet to pass through. After bending in area 13 the sheets may be supported on curved rolls 17. The bending is by means of outline mold 19, which is raised by piston 70 to contact the sheets 15 and shape them by the "Inertia-Gravity" method. The sheets 15 are tempered by chilling fluid from blastheads 20, 21, the first series of blasthead sections 22 comprising tubes 47, and the second series of sections comprising apertured plates. The sheets may be supported in the tempering area 14 by spring-type rolls 18, which comprise a metal coil disposed within a fibre-glass sleeve 36.
