Abstract

1493724 Removing iron from titaniferous materials EIDU POINT DE NEMOURS & CO 18 April 1975 [19 April 1974] 16049/75 Heading ClN Titaniferous materials are upgraded by chlorinating the Fe constituent thereof by intimately contacting the material with FeCl 3 at a temperature of at least 950‹ C. in the presence of a reductant comprising solid carbonaceous material and/or gaseous CO, the amount of C in said solid carbonaceous material being greater than the stoichiometric amount for conversion of oxygen bound to said Fe constituent to CO 2 and less than or equal to the stoichiometric amount for conversion of said oxygen to CO, the amount of said gaseous CO being at least sufficient to convert the balance of said oxygen to CO 2 . The FeCl 3 may be produced by the oxidation of FeCl 2 with gaseous Cl 2 or a gas containing at least 20% O 2 . A substantial CO 2 partial pressure is preferably maintained in the system. The process may be a cyclic one in which FeCl 2 in the reaction is recycled, oxidized to FeCl 3 and passed over the titaniferous material. The titaniferous material and carbonaceous reductant may be in the form of a fixed or fluidized bed.
