Abstract
1493102 Microchannel body HORIZONS Inc 7 Jan 1965 [17 Jan 1964] 776/65 Heading ClJ A microchannel body is made by coating an organic or metallic filament with a dispersion of a finely divided ceramic material in a polymer, bonding stacked parallel portions of the filament together, removing the filament to form parallel passages, and heating to remove the polymer and densify the ceramic. The filament may be of copper, aluminium, or iron, or of nylon or rayon. The coating medium may be a dispersion of TiO 2 , barium titanate, alumina, silica, or MgO in polyvinyl alcohol, polystyrene, ethyl cellulose, cellulose nitrate, or dialkoxy-polytitanates, together with plasticizers, solvents, wetting agents, or deflocculants, if desired. The metal filaments are removed by treatment with chlorine or bromine to form volatile halides, or by dissolving in an aqueous or alcoholic solution of bromine or iodine. Nylon and rayon filaments are removed by heating, or nylon filaments may be dissolved in formic acid. Magnesia may be deposited as an electron-emissive substance on the channel walls, or a titania body may be partially reduced in hydrogen. The body may have a microchannel area fraction of at least 40% and is useful in the electronic amplification of optical images and storage of information or as a semi-conductive ceramic material.
