Abstract

1489606 Shaft couplings CAV Ltd 30 Jan 1975 [8 Feb 1974] 5823/74 Heading F2U [Also in Division F1] A fuel injection pump includes a fluid pressure operable timing varying device coupling the pump's drive shaft 12 to an associated engine, the device comprising an elongated support member 13 mounted on the shaft 12, an input member 18, 24 angularly movable on a cylindrical portion 17 of the support member 13, and a piston 28 axially slidable without rotation on a non-circular portion 16 of the support member 13 and provided with helical splines engaging complementary splines 21 on the input member 18. The piston 28 slides in a cylinder formed in the member 24, the axial position of the piston and thus the angular phase relationship between the input member 18, 24 and the shaft 12, being determined by the pressure of fluid supplied to the cylinder. Fluid is supplied to the cylinder through a passage 33 in a body 10, an annular chamber limited by seals 31, 32, a passage 30 in the support member 13 and the space between the helical splines. Movement of the piston is resisted by a coil spring 29 located in a chamber closed by a seal 35 which permits angular movement between the support member 13 and the input member 24. A spool valve, Fig. 3 (not shown), controls the pressure supply to the cylinder, the position of the spool (38) being determined by the current supplied to a solenoid (44) surrounding an armature (46) attached to the spool.
