Abstract

1488321 Construction system CHIU'S JOINT SYSTEMS Ltd 9 Dec 1975 50410/75 Headings E1K and E1W [Also in Division F2] A structural element 16 e.g. partition, glass panel, is affixed to an integrally formed longitudinal hollow support member 10 having at least two longitudinally extending slots formed in each of its four faces by having its edge portion sandwiched between two L- shaped elongate resilient cushion elements 15. 17 located in the slots and which are affixed thereto either by adhesive or are restrained by ribs 12a formed at the edges of the slots, and by inserting an elongate sealing element 18 between the element 16 and one of the cushion elements 17. Two support members 10, 10' may be joined together at right angles as in Fig. 5 by means of a connecting member 22 comprising a base portion 21 which is attached to one of the support members 10 by means of bolt 28, and a resilient insert portion 20 having two parallel prongs 22 which terminate in oppositely facing flanges 23 which are such that their free ends are normally slightly spaced apart but which when compressed towards each other permit the insert portion to be inserted into the other support members 10'. The free ends of the flanges are provided with semi-cylindrical parts 24 the interiors of which are threaded 25 and enable the support member 10' to be locked to the connecting member by means of a bolt inserted through an aperture in the support member into the thread 25. Also shown in Fig. 5 is an alternative way of fixing the connecting member to support member 10 in which the connecting member is provided with two flanges 31 which engage two slots in the support member and grip the side walls of the slots when compressed together by means of bolt 34.
