Abstract
1485461 Sensing combustible gas GREENPAR HEAT TREATMENTS Ltd 25 Sept 1974 [23 Jan 1974] 03183/74 Heading G1N A safety system which operates to turn off a fuel supply and detection of a combustible gas, comprises a transducer 16 positioned for detection of a combustible gas and including two electrodes 24, 25, means, e.g. a multi-vibrator, for energizing the electrode 24 with short duration electrical pulses, means for detecting a current flow between the electrodes 24, 25 on detection of a combustible gas, and means operable from the detected current flow to close a fuel supply valve. The system may be applied to the detection of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, propane, butane or alcohol vapour, and particularly to the detection of a fuel gas supplied in a pressurized container and installed in a yacht or caravan. The transducer 16 is an n-type semi-conductor comprises a sintered mass of tin dioxide whose electrical conductivity increases in the presence of a combustible gas. The electrodes 24, 25 are of platinum/iridium alloy, the electrode 24 serving also as an electric heater for the transducer 16 and energized by a multi-vibrator comprising capacitors C2, C3 and transistors TR1, TR2, TR3, the transistor TR1 regulating the charging of the capacitor C2. The power supply is regulated by a Darlington pair TR4, TR5, and a Zener diode Z1. The increased current flow between the electrodes 24, 25 on detection of a combustible gas triggers a thyristor SCR to operate a relay 1 to turn off a fuel supply valve (12) Fig. 1 (not shown) and to energize a ventilation fan (18), a warning lamp (20) and a buzzer (22). An alternative embodiment Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) includes four transducers.
