Abstract
1484254 Supported catalyst components for olefin polymerization BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 10 Oct 1974 [2 Nov 1973] 50932/73 Heading C3P A supported catalyst component for the polymerization of olefins is prepared by reacting a substantially dry inorganic oxide support containing surface hydroxyl groups with not more than the stoichiometric quantity relative to the hydroxyl groups of a magnesium compound which is a Grignard reagent, an alkyl magnesium compound or a magnesium alkoxide and incorporating a transition metal compound in the solid. The support may be silica, thoria, alumina, zirconia or silica-alumina, and the transition metal compound may be titanium tetrachloride, tetraethylate, tetraisopropylate or triethylate monochloride. The supported component may be used together with an organometallic compound as a catalyst for the polymerization of olefins in the gas phase or liquid phase. In the example ethylmagnesium bromide is reacted with silica in diethylether to form a solid product which, after suspension in cyclohexane, is treated with isobutanol, TiCl 4 and titanium isopropylate and used with aluminium triethyl to polymerize ethylene in isobutane in the presence of hydrogen.
