Abstract
1482937 Producing chlorate and related materials electrolytically HOOKER CHEMICALS & PLASTICS CORP 31 Oct 1974 [1 Nov 1973] 47168/74 Heading C7B Hydroxide, hydrogen, chlorine and chlorate are electrolytically produced from an aqueous alkali metal chloride solution using a cell divided by a cation permselective diaphragm made either of a hydrolyzed copolymer of a perfluorocarbon and a fluorosulphonated perfluopovinyl ether or of a sulphostyrenated perfluoro ethylene propylene copolymer to produce hydroxide and hydrogen in the cathode compartment and chlorine and chlorate in the anode compartment, the anolyte being removed and further electrolyzed in a chlorate cell to convert remaining chloride therein to chlorate. The hydrolyzed copolymer may be of tetrafluoroethylene with a vinyl ether of Formula FSO 2 CF 2 CF 2 OCF(CF 3 )CF 2 OCF = CF 2 . The sulphonyl groups of the membrane may be converted to -SO 2 NH 2 . A membrane support of fibres or mesh may be used cemented or fused thereto by heat and pressure and made of e.g. PTFE, polypropylene, perfluorinated ethylene propylene copolymer, asbestos, Ti, Nb, Ta or a Pt group metal. The membrane may be hydrolyzed after emplacement on the support. The anode in the chloride cell may be mesh comprising a valve metal (e.g. Ti or Ta) coated with a Pt group metal, alloy and/or oxide which may contain a valve metal oxide and in the chlorate cell may be graphite or Pt-Ir optionally coated on Ti. The cathode in the chloride cell may be graphite or steel mesh or may be a Pt group metal coated on steel or Cu, and in the chlorate cell may be a steel cell wall. Mono- or bi-polar electrodes are specified. Chlorate and chloride from the (undivided) chlorate cell are separated out, and the latter may be returned to the first cell. Molten liquor may be returned to either or both cells. Anolyte and catholyte may be separately recycled for agitation and/or cooling. The cells may be refrigerated. Specified conditions are anolyte pH 3-7À5, temperatures below 105C, cell voltage 2À3-6V and current density 0À5-6 A/in<SP>2</SP>. The pH may be controlled using HCl manufactured by recombination of H 2 and Cl 2 produced. It is stated that the amount of chlorate made in the diaphragm cell may be controlled by altering the thickness and/or cation permselectivity of the membrane.
