Abstract
1481220 Continuous casting VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN-UND STAHLWERKE ALPINE MONTAN AG 26 July 1974 [27 July 1973] 33162/74 Heading B3F A continuously cast slab 2 is cooled by spray from nozzles 10 distributed across the width and over a given length of the strand path and are displaced, during casting, by means which displace them over horizontal straight paths parallel to the strand surface and transversely of the strand within a given displacement range. As shown the nozzles 10 are in rows on consecutive pairs of headers 9, 9, 11, 11 and 12, 12 at the ends of pipes 13, 14 and 15 paired in consecutive cooling sections 6, 7, 8 and which can slide in bearings 16 to move the headers and nozzles between limits 17 and 18 on either side of the strand axis 20. The headers are moved back and forth during casting, by fluid-actuated pistons, electric motor or crank rods, in a cyclically uniform, e.g. sinusoidal way or in an irregular way with a longer dwell period near the strand axis 20 then near the edges 19. The headers 11 are staggered in transverse position with respect to headers 9, 12 as indicated, so that they approach one another as the others move apart, and vice versa. The arrangements are applied at both broad sides of the strand path. When the strand width is changed, the positions of the limits 18 are changed, e.g. by changing a limit switch. The positions of the limits 17 are chosen so that the middle zone is sprayed when the opposed headers of a pair are at their closest. There may be a single nozzle in each cooling section 6, 7 or 8, moving back and forth between the limits 18, instead of a pair moving towards and away from each other. The cooling sections 6, 7, 8 follow an oscillating mould and are followed by two pairs of withdrawal rollers (4) with intervening guide rollers (3).
