Abstract

1481169 Ignition systems LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 5 Aug 1974 [25 Sept 1973] 44775/73 Heading F1B A spark ignition system in a reciprocating piston internal combustion engine comprises a pair of spark gaps located in a cylinder 31 of the engine, the gaps having different ignition characteristics and switching means 14 operated automatically in accordance with engine conditions and determining the direction of current flow in a primary winding 17 of an ignition transformer the secondary winding 18 of which feeds each spark gap through polarity sensitive means 25, 26 determining which spark gap is operative. The two spark gaps may be incorporated in a single spark plug or separate spark plugs 27, 28 may be used. If desired more than two spark gaps could be provided in a cylinder. In a modification suitable for a single cylinder engine, the secondary winding of the ignition transformer has its ends connected through resistors to the inner electrodes of a pair of sparking plugs. The inner electrodes are connected to earth through respective rectifiers. Two primary windings may be provided in the ignition transformer. The distributer may have two movable contacts.
