Abstract

1480417 Alpha-numeric displays STAVER CO Inc 17 Oct 1974 [12 Nov 1973] 45059/74 Heading G5C To indicate any numeral from 0 to 9, a readout device comprising seven segments arranged as a numeral "8" carries, behind the seven elongated window openings 14 in window plate 12, seven flags 15, each mounted on an axis parallel to its respective opening so that the flag can be turned to appear in the opening by means of a permanent magnet 38, set transversely to the axis and activated by the field from a corresponding magnetic core 42 projecting from a common magnetic back plate 58 and carrying the coil 44 of an electromagnet. To avoid interference the central three coils under the horizontal bars of the "8" are of opposite polarity to the four lateral coils, the rotating permanent magnets being correspondingly reversed. Each magnet rotates between slotted flanges 32 integral with a non-magnetic support plate 18, steps 46, 46<SP>1</SP> on the rotating part engaging shoulders 37a, 37b to limit rotation to 75 degrees, giving a bi-stable orientation of the magnet, switchable by a pulse of current of one polarity to show the flag, and the other to clear. Centre tapping of the coils facilitates circuit design (Fig. 9, not shown), including common clearing by a reverse pulse. Rotation may be limited to 60 degrees if bi-stable "memory" is not required.
