Abstract
1479728 Foamed polyurethane coatings COOLAG Ltd 15 Oct 1974 [17 Oct 1973] 48379/73 Heading B2E Thermal insulation, e.g. for vessels used to hold liquid gases, comprises a first layer of rigid or semi-rigid urethane foam, a second crack arresting layer of urethane elastomer formed from a prepolymer and a further layer of rigid or semi rigid polyurethane foam formed on the side of the crack arresting layer remote from the first layer by applying thereto a urethane reaction mixture and allowing the mixture to firm and cure. The urethanes may be prepared by reaction of isocyanates, e.g. toluene diisocyanate or diphenylmethene diisocyanate with polyols, e.g. polyether or polyester based polyols. Elastomer forming prepolymers and foam forming prepolymers may be applied alternately, e.g. by spraying, to a spherical tank for holding liquified gases, e.g. of aluminium or 9% nickel steel. In Figure 1, 11, 13, 15, 16 are foam layers and 12 and 14 are elastomer layers on tank wall 10. In Figure 2, layer 11 is omitted so the tank has an initial elastomer layer.
