Abstract

1479638 Coated metals AMCHEM PRODUCTS Inc 3 July 1974 [13 July 1973] 29429/ 74 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C3 and C7] Surfaces of iron, iron alloys (e.g. steel), tin, tin plate, zinc or a galvanised surface, aluminium, and alloys of these metals are treated by contacting with an aqueous composition which is free of hexavalent chromium and which contains 0.1-5.0 grams per litre of an organic polymer and at least 0.1, preferably 0.1 to 3.5, grams per litre (calculated as ZrO 2 ) of zirconium in the form of one or more watersoluble, stable zirconium compounds. The treatment may comprise the formation of a conversion coating on a base metal, or subsequent treatment of a metal surface that has already received, for example, a chromate or phosphate conversion coating. The aqueous composition suitably has a pH of 6 to 8 and the treatment is preferably operated at a temperature of from 60‹F to 120‹F. The organic polymer may be one or more of polyacrylic acid, polyvinyl alcohol, ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyvinyl methyl ether, an acrylic latex copolymer, a carboxyvinyl polymer, ammonium polyacrylate, polyacrylamide, phosphated starch, and a cellulose ether. Examples of suitable zirconium compounds are alkali metal and ammonium fluozirconates and ammonium zirconium carbonate.
