Abstract

1478083 Purifying methane INTITUTE OF GAS TECHNOLOGY 29 April 1975 17866/75 Heading C5E In a method of removing hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide from a mixture containing these gases and methane, the mixture is separated using a membrane having selective permeability for the acidic gases to be removed. Preferably an anisotropic or composite membrane is used, comprising a thin membrane layer supported on a thicker membrane layer having different solubility or permeability properties. The pressure on the feed pressure side of the membrane is preferably greater than that of the permeate side of the membrane, and is preferably greater than atmospheric. The membrane may be of a cellulose ester, gelatine, or a plastics material.
