Abstract
1476891 Alkylaryl sulphonates EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 3 March 1975 [8 March 1974 17 July 1974] 8740/75 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] An emulsifier composition comprises salts of alkylaryl sulphonic acids and an organic and an inorganic base, wherein the molecular weights of the acids from which the salts are desired are distributed according to the function C =f(M) where C denotes concentration and M denotes molecular weight of individual acids, which function has two distinct concentration maxima at molecular weights M 1 and M 2 with M 1 <M 2 wherein there are 5-95% of M 1 acids and 95- 5% M 2 acids, M 1 is 270 to 400 and (M 2 -M 1 ) is 80 to 350. The salts may be sodium salts of alkylbenzene sulphonic acids and/or alkylorthoxylene sulphonic acids, e.g. C 8 -C 10 alkylorthoxylene sulphonic acids and C 18 to C 28 alkylbenzene sulphonic acids. The alkylaryl moiety may be the akylation product of orthoxylene with tetrapropylene, and the alkylbenzene moiety may be the alkylation product of benzene and a propylene oligomer with an average of 24 C atoms per molecule. Preferred salts are sodium, ammonium, monoethanolamine, diethanolamine and triethanolamine. The sulphonates may be prepared by mixing M 1 and M 2 alkylaryl sulphonic acids or by neutralizing a mixture of M 1 and M 2 alkylaryl sulphonic acids with a base. Alternatively a mixture of alkyl aryl aromatic hydrocarbons may be sulphonated and neutralized. Alkylbenzenes used are alkylation products of benzene and its homologues with up to 10 C atoms, e.g. toluene, oxylene and ethylbenzene. The alkyl groups are preferably branched chain alkyl groups.
