Abstract

1475488 Silicon and aluminium nitrate; aluminium oxides AGENCY OF INDUSTRIAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 29 Jan 1976 [30 Jan 1975] 03538/76 Heading ClA [Also in Division C7] Sintered Si 2 N 4 ceramics are made by sintering a powder mixture of 80-40% weight SiO 2 and 60-20% weight Al in a N 2 atmosphere, initially at 1200‹ C. and finally at 1600- 2000‹ C. The sintered product is composed predominantly of a solid solution of The powders are preferably mixed with a 10% solution of starch paste, moulded at 400- 2000 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>, heated in a N 2 atmosphere at 10‹ C./min. up to 1200‹ C., held at 1200‹ C. for 5 hours, at 1400‹ C. for 5 hours and at 1700‹ C. for 5 hours. Alternatively the moulding after heating at 1200-1400‹ C. in a N 2 atmosphere is crushed to 20 microns or less and then hot pressed in a graphite die at 100-300 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> at 1400‹ C. for 1 hour and then at 1600-2000‹ C.
