Abstract
1473165 Photochromic material AGENCE NATIONALE DE VALORISATION DE LA RECHERCHE 22 July 1974 [3 Aug 1973] 32397/74 Heading G2C A photo-sensitive layer comprises (a) at least one heterocyclic photochromic spiro-pyrane which can exist in two forms and is selectively converted from one form to another on irradiation according to the scheme wherein R 3 is methyl, phenylthio, phenyl, chloro, bromo, methoxy, hydroxy, naphthyl, 4-chlorophenyl, 4-bromophenyl, 4-hydroxyphenyl or 4-methoxyphenyl; R' 3 is methyl, isopropyl, n-hexyl, benzyl or phenylethyl; R 6 is nitro; R' 6 is hydrogen, or methylthio; R 8 is methoxy; and X is thio, seleno, imido, oxo, aza or dialkylcarbo; and # 1 and # 2 are wavelengths in the ultraviolet and visible light ranges respectively, (b) at least one nitrogencontaining heterocyclic thioether substituted in the α-position to the ring carbon atom of the following Formula: alkylene, alkylidene or when taken together with the N atom and C atom is a benzothiazole, benzoxazole, N-alkyl-imidazole or -thiazole ring and R 1 , R 2 amd R' 2 are alkyl or acylalkyl groups, the open form of the spiropyrane being capable of acting as a catalyst in the conversion of the thioether to a thione which takes place at temperatures of at least 100‹C in accordance with the reaction:- and (c) at least one reagent for forming a visible image selected from (i) at least one metal salt which is a behenate, resinate, naphthenate, benzoate or steorate of silver, cadmium, calcium, copper, cobalt, tin, manganese, magnesium, nickel, lead or zinc, (ii) at least one compound selected from zinc, cobalt or nickel halide and zinc or cobalt thiocyanate. The layer may further contain a semiconducting metal oxide selected from titanium oxide (which may have been doped with copper) and zinc oxide (which may have been doped with nickel and/or cerium). A cobalt, copper or nickel salt which fixes the spiropyrane in the open form may also be present. The visible stable image is formed by different reactions: (1) reduction, by the thione produced, of the metal carboxylate(s) or (2) formation of a complex of the thione with the zinc, cobalt or nickel halide or the zinc or cobalt thiocyanate.
