Abstract

1471896 Making staples CROMPTON NETTLEFOLD STENMAN Ltd 15 July 1975 [173 July 1974] 31640/74 Heading B3A [Also in Division E2] A staple comprises a tongue 1, Fig. 1, and mounting-plates 2, 3 and is formed from a single piece of sheet metal. The tongue is provided with an aperture 6 and the mounting-plates are provided with counter-sunk mounting holes 7. Both of the mounting-plates can extend in a common plane at right angles to the plane of the tongue, as shown, or the tongue may extend in the same plane as one of the mounting-plates to facilitate the securing to a post for example. The staple is manufactured from a strip of sheet metal in an automatic machine having stations A to I, Fig. 5, which effect piercing countersinking, separating of the mounting- plate portions from the adjacent mounting-plate portions, slotting, bending of the mounting- plate portions, shearing of a partly formed staple from the remainder of the strip, bending the tongue portion into a "V" shaped configuration, and flattening the "V" shaped configuration into a back-to-back configuration.
