Abstract

1471779 Aminoplast/polyester coating compositions CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 28 Aug 1974 [29 Aug 1973] 37536/74 Heading C3R A liquid coating composition comprises: a binder comprising 45-10% wt. of (A) aminoplast(s) or precursors, and 55-90% wt. (B) OH- and COOH- containing polyester(s) of average M.W. < 800; or a binder formed by co-condensing (A), or the starting materials for (A), with (B); where (B) is made by esterifying polyol component (I) and dicarboxylic acid component (III), (I) consisting by moles, of: (I.1), 0-50% C 3-6 aliphatic triols or tetrols, and (I.2) 100-50% diol component (II) consisting of ethylene glycol and/or propylene glycol, 0-30% being replaceable with other aliphatic or cycloaliphatic diols; and (III) consisting of, by moles, (III.1) 50-100% of aromatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acids or derivatives, the acids being hexahydroterephthalic acid with or without 1,2- or 1,3-dicarboxylic acids, and (III.2) 50-0% C 4-12 saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acids or derivatives, 25- 75% of (III) being hexahydroterephthalic acid. The composition optionally contains a minor proportion 0-20% wt. of an organic solvent. (B) may have a degree of polymerization as low as 2À5. (A) may be aminoplast precursors liquid at 20‹ C. The composition may also comprise a pigment. The pigment/binder weight ratio may be from 0À3 to 1À3 or higher. 0À5% wt. ptoluenesulphonic acid may be present.
