Abstract
1466475 Producing iron sponge ELEKTROSCHMELZWERK KEMPTEN GmbH 22 Feb 1974 [23 Feb 1973] 8168/74 Heading C7D Iron sponge is produced by mixing pulverulent iron ore containing at least 95 wt. per cent iron oxide, and in which at least 80 wt. per cent of the particles have a size below 40 Ám, with from 0À1- 10 wt. per cent, relative to the weight of the mixture, of silicon carbide having an average particle size within the range of from 10 Ám to 2 mm; forming the mixture into discrete bodies, e.g. by pelletizing; and directly reducing the mixture. The sponge produced may be used in the production of steel or various cast irons.
