Abstract

1466064 Cellulosic colloids used in emulsion polymerization JAMES FERGUSON & SONS Ltd 6 March 1974 [6 March 1973] 10890/73 Heading C3P An emulsion polymer is prepared by emulsion polymerizing an olefinic monomer or a mixture of monomers comprising at least 80 wt. per cent of acrylic monomers and/or styrene in the presence of an initiator, a dispersing agent and a low molecular weight cellulosic material or a partially degraded colloidal cellulosic material, said cellulosic material having a viscosity of up to 50 cps as measured on a 5% aqueous soln. in an Epprecht viscometer (cup A speed III). Suitable specific cellulosic materials are a commercial low molecular weight hydroxyethyl cellulose, partially degraded hydroxyethyl cellulose and partially degraded carboxymethylated hydroxyethyl cellulose. When a degraded cellulosic material is used, the degradation treatment (e.g. heating with a per-salt) is preferably effected immediately prior to polymerization. In the examples monomers selected from acrylates, methacrylates, methacrylic acid, acrylamide and styrene and mixtures thereof, are used. The emulsions may be used for formulating paints.
