Abstract
1462971 Making heat exchangers; coiling and bending ATOMENERGI AB 16 Jan 1974 [16 Jan 1973 24 Aug 1973] 02062/74 Headings B3A and B3E [Also in Division F4] A convector space heater comprises a single tube 1 wound into a continuous non-spiral coil of generally flattened overall configuration and having a medial reference plane, the coil comprising a series of loops having runs connected by end portions with some of the runs on at least one side of the reference plane being spaced closer thereto than others on that same side. As shown the coil is supported at its centre and near the end portions by spacer elements 2 each of which is made up of three pivotable and suitably recessed co-operating sections 3, 4. Pivoting of the sections 3, 4 so that they lie in the same plane (see Figs. 3 and 5) displaces the runs of the tube coil so that some are spaced closer to the medial reference plane. The tube may be made of metal, crosslinked polyethylene or reinforced rubber. The coil may be produced by winding a tube around various types of spaced apart upright formers (see Figs. 8-10) which are later removed after spacers (19, Fig. 12) have been inserted (see Figs. 11-15). Each former may comprise a stack of separate circular or semicircular discs held together axially by a central nut and bolt (see Fig. 8); the adjacent discs may be displaced relative to one another (see Figs. 9 and 10). The members serving to space apart and support adjacent turns of the coil may be in the form of rods (21, Fig. 18) or grooved bars (23, Fig. 17) between which the tube turns are clamped; clamping together serves to compress the coil and hence reduce its thickness (see Fig. 18). In an alternative construction (not shown) the bend portions of the coil are coaxial and are wound on uprights that act both as formers and supports. The uprights can be metal tubes with ribbed sleeves to locate the tube turns. Preferably the uprights are mounted in a wooden frame and are spring urged away from each other to keep the coil taut.
