Abstract
1457321 Sprinkler systems for fire protection ITT INDUSTRIES Into 26 Feb 1974 [28 Feb 1973] 8658/74 Heading A5A A sprinkler for a fire protection system coupled to a fluid supply line comprises a sprinkler body 12 having an inlet port 14 coupled to the supply line, an outlet orifice 18, a rupture disc valve 26 providing a seal for the fluid flow passage through the sprinkler body and an electrically fired explosive squib 34 mounted in the fluid flow path which, on activation by a detector assembly 40 blows the disc valve 26. The detector assembly 40 comprises (i) a mercury thermostat/switch 46 which completes an electrical circuit to fire the squib 34 when a predetermined temperature is reached, and (ii) a lens 44 and light detector cell array 48 Which can generate current to fire the squib 34 if the battery for the mercury switch circuit fails. The squib 34 may also be activated by a remote fire deteotor 74 which may be a thermostatic switch or a smoke, ionization or photoelectric detector. In an alternative embodiment (Figure 5) the detector 80 and explosive squib 106 are affixed to the sprinkler by a bracket 96, the sprinkler orifice being flanked by button disc 86 held by struts 88 and 90 the latter being fixed to a bell-shaped key 92 which in turn is fixed by fusible folder to bell-shaped heat collector 94. On ignition of 106 a jet of molten material impinges on 94 and melts the solder so allowing 92 to fall away and free the struts 90 and 88 and consequently 86. A thermostat 108 acts as the heat detector.
