Abstract

1457061 Cooling steel rails BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP 17 April 1974 [2 May 1973] 16724/74 Headings C7A and C7N A steel rail containing in percentage by wt:- is hot-rolled above 2000‹F, preferably in the range 2100-2350‹F and is then cooled at 200-600‹F/min from above 1800‹F to a temperature in the range 700-1000‹F whereby there is produced a fine pearlike structure with an interlamellar spacing of less than 1500‹A. Preferably the steel is then cooled at a controlled rate to prevent hydrogen flaking. Suitable apparatus for mounting on the run-out table of the rolling mill includes adjustably spaced side walls 16 in which are mounted coolant nozzles 30 supplied by manifolds 32. In an example the rail is cooled by high-pressure steam.
