Abstract
1455172 Centrifugal casting processes CABOT CORP 14 Jan 1974 [12 Jan 1973] 01614/74 Heading B3F In a method of centrifugally casting hollow metal objects, a molten decrepitating slag is introduced into the rotating mould immediately after the molten metal has been poured. The slag, which preferably consists of di-calcium orthosilicate together with some calcium fluoride breaks up on solidification and is thus readily removed from the cast object. Carbon may be dissolved in the slag prior to its introduction into the mould. This carbon transfers to the metal during the casting process to produce an object having a carbon-rich inner layer. Examples describe the casting of an alloy containing 30% Cr, 20% Ni, 0À4% C. up to 2% Mn, up to 2% Si, up to 0À5% Mo, balance Fe at temperatures between 2850 and 2900 F. using a mould rotating at 900 or 1100 r.p.m. The slag may be poured at temperatures between 2700 and 3150 F.
