1454895 Abrasive compositions UNILEVER Ltd 13 Nov 1973 [15 Nov 1972] 52737/72 Headings C4V and C5D A liquid, paste or powdered scouring composition comprises (a) a particulate abrasive of Moh's hardness 3-7, (b) an organic phosphoric or phosphonic acid monoester polishing agent having the formula wherein n is the actual number of ethylene oxide units and is 0-5, m is 1, or 0 if n is 0, R 1 and R 2 are hydrocarbon chains wherein R 1 is -(CH 2 ) x CH 3 or -(CH 2 ) x C 6 H 5 , R 2 is or -(CH 2 ) y C 6 H 5 or H and R 3 is one of or in which x, y or z are integers which may 0 and x+y+z is from 4 to 17 when alkyl hydrocarbon organic groups are employed in R 1 , R 2 or R 3 and from 4 to 14 when aryl or hydroxyalkyl groups are employed in R 3 , or when a mixture of alkyl and hydroxyalkyl or aryl groups are employed in R 1 , R 2 or R 3 and (c) an inorganic salt is defined present such that a 10% w./v. slurry of the composition in water as a pH within the range 5-11. Suitable abrasives are calcite, silica, felspar, apetite, pumice or dolomite. Preferred polishing agents are phosphoric acid monoesters of octanol, decanol, dodecanol, tetradecanol, hexadecanol, octadecanol and of the di-, tri- and tetraglycol ethers of C 12 -C 8 alcohols, either singly or in mixtures. Particularly preferred is lauryl phosphate. The phosphates/phosphonates may be present in the acid form as mono- or dialkali metal, magnesium, ammonium or substituted ammonium salts, e.g. sodium carbonate, sodium silicate and sodium bicarbonate. Suitable inorganic salts and acid salts are alkali metal, magnesium, ammonium or substituted ammonium salts of inorganic halo- and oxyacids except the phosphorus-oxyacids. A surface active agent may be included and this may be anionic, nonionic, zwitterionic or a mixture of these, e.g. sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, sodium olefin sulphonate, octyl dodecyl ammonium chloride, nonyl phenol/ethylene oxide adduct. In a modification of the invention a liquid or paste scouring composition is claimed in which the particulate abrasive has a Moh's hardness of 7-9.
