Abstract

1454888 Trochoidal IC engines; housings AUDI NSU AUTO UNION A G and WANKEL GmbH 1 May 1975 [2 May 1974] 18175/75 Heading F1F A centre housing for a trochoidal-type I.C. engine, comprises a liner 3 of hardened sheet steel. The centre housing has two mirror-image halves 1, 2 held together by tubes 10. Sealing between halves 1, 2 is effected by rings 13 in grooves 12 in half 2, the chambers 4 for coolant being thus sealed. The hardened sheet steel liner 3 is shrunk into the halves 1, 2 before they are joined. Seals 13 may be replaced by adhesive in co-operating grooves of the two halves Fig. 3, (not shown). In an alternative embodiment Figs. 4 and 5, (not shown), the liner is provided with an intermediate plate on the transverse centre plane of the housing, each half being adhered to the plate which is welded or brazed to the liner. An annular strip may be located across the join of the two halves on the internal peripheral surface thereof Fig, 7, (not shown), and the liner may be provided with strengthening external ribs over the "hot-arch" zone Fig. 8, (not shown).
